Like Charlie, Joely dreamt of owning a chocolate factory as a child, but realised that her true love was the cello at the age of 9. Having musical parents was a bit like being in the circus and inevitably she was drawn into the family business!
Joely now pursues a varied musical career as an orchestral principal, chamber musician, and soloist. Performing as Principal with the English Symphony Orchestra, and co-principal with the City of London Sinfonia and the London Chamber Orchestra, she also plays as guest principal with several orchestras including London Sinfonietta, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC Philharmonia. Joely also regularly records in the studio and won a Grammy for backing Amy Winehouse on “Rehab”.
For the last twenty years Joely has very much enjoyed being professor of Cello at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. She is a co-founder and tutor of “Cello Dynamo” - a residential course for young cellists - and is regularly invited to give masterclasses at the London Cello Society. Most recently Joely has taken up a post of cello teacher at Eton College.
Joely has been learning Pilates with Linda Donovan for nearly two decades. Linda attended the first ever Pilates classes taught in London at the Dance Centre at Covent Garden with Alan Herdman. He in turn was taught by Joseph Pilates in New York, so Joely feels a connection back to the man himself. Linda continues to be a very important mentor for her.
For relaxation Joely likes to play her cello and sing at the same time - it feels a bit like juggling. But her favourite moments are when she can share music-making with her husband and two children... the family business is going strong!
