'Scordatura' is often seen as something to be scared of but it has always been part of string playing. Schumann, Bartók, Mozart, Saint-Saëns, Mahler, Kodály, (just to name a few) all used it, and it has become as common in new music today as it was in the 17th century, when it was an 'everday' tool. Philippe Borer and Peter Sheppard Skaerved, hosted by Gwendolyn Masin, discuss and demonstrate aspects of the technique, ranging from its use by Paganini, through to its many and varied manifestations in the baroque, from Biber to Colombi.
