Learning to breathe according to our true anatomical structure can teach us about a skeletal and muscular balance throughout the whole body and free our arms, head, spine and legs for our music-making. Breathing mythologies that exist in our western culture have led many of us to breathe using unnecessary muscular work, which impedes movement in musical practice and performance. Learning to breathe well also informs our artistic intentions and allows us to produce the phrase that we hear clearly in our heads but is not emerging clearly from our instruments. Join us for an in-depth and interactive look at how our bodies are designed to breathe and how we can use that breath to free our sound and our musical intention!
December 8th - Day 1
An introduction to Body Mapping principles looking at the importance of retraining the senses and awareness in order to learn to move more freely. Breathing pioneers of the 20th century such as F.M. Alexander and Carl Stough and a summary of their discoveries will be included. This class will end with an exploration for musicians to discover how they presently use their breath (or don’t!) when they make music.
